Goli & Bosi | Split Design Hostel | Studio Up

Location: Split, Croatia

Goli Bosi Design Hostel is located in the heart of the old town of Split, within the walls of a roman palace built in 4th century by a Roman emperor Diocletian.

Designed by Studio Up , the project is considered a renovation in that a former department store used to reside in this location. The 29 room hostel is the perfect accommodation for the traveling vagabond who desires a clean environment, but doesn’t want to shell out cash.

“The hostel space itself is designed as a hybrid of a japanese pill hotel and an old european department store, with the story of Split written all over it’s walls, so you get to meet the city you are staying in, because hostel is in the city and city is in the hostel as well. All is yellow. Why? Because sulphur is yellow and Split was famous for it’s sulfurous baths in the old days”

The interiors are divided up by skewed walls partitions that are designed along the perimeter of its odd shaped site. Some rooms utilize double height spaces for beds and while I find the infographics within the interiors give a nice modern identity to this minimalistic architecture, my favorite design intention of this project is the significance of the yellow being the color of sulphur since sulphur baths were ubiquitous in the old days of Split. This link of history to the current in its many elements make this hostel be more interesting to the city.
